Shriners International adopted The Fez as their official headgear in 1872. The red fez with a black tassel is the Shrine’s most distinctive symbol. The symbol has been handed down throughout the ages.
The hat represented the Arabian theme of the fraternity that was founded and named after the city of Fez, Morocco.
It also serves as an outward symbol of one’s membership in the fraternity.
